FAQ

As you read some posts on this site, you may be asking yourself what certain things mean or a bit lost on the background behind some of the discussion. If so, you’ve come to the right place! Here are some explanations of things that are discussed in different posts that I may not have explained at all or in much detail.

  • Electrification – The process of electrification refers to the conversion of a rail system that predominantly or completely uses trains powered by diesel fuel to a system that uses mostly electric trains. On most modern railway systems, electric trains obtain their power from overheard lines above the track known as the catenary which are supported by masts called stanchions. Electrification involves the construction and placement of the electrical systems, the catenary and the stanchions to allow electric trains to operate.
  • TOD – A TOD is a transit-oriented development. These are communities that often occupy a section or entirety of a district or suburb. The goal of a TOD is to encourage the creation of sustainable and livable spaces by  providing a mixture of high density residential living, street level retail and quality public spaces within short walking distances of existing public transport infrastructure – usually a railway station or busway. The spaces are designed to encourage walking and cycling along with public transport, encourage vibrant street activity and discourage the use of the car.

If you have any questions or feel that anything on this site needs further explanation, please let me know and I will add it here.
